Little legs, village adventures

  1. Start small

Walk from Market Street to the harbour for lough views and a look at the castle from outside. Count boats, spot birds and keep children with an adult beside the water.

  2. Follow the old streets

Make a short loop back through the village to the Tholsel. Our history guide turns gates and tower houses into stories; choose a couple of landmarks instead of trying to see everything.

  3. Leave room for a treat

Stop at a village café or Sweet Sundaes, then browse for a postcard before heading back to the hotel. Add the Heritage Centre if it is open and everyone still has energy.

Uneven paving, steps and traffic mean this is not a guaranteed step-free route. Ask reception about the easiest approach for your buggy or mobility needs.

A Greenway day at your own pace

  1. Get the right equipment

Pre-book with a local bike-hire team and give children’s ages and heights. Ask about helmets, child seats, trailers or tag-alongs, then agree a route that suits the least confident rider.

  2. Make a small journey

Head towards Omeath beside the lough. You can turn back at any point: a good family day does not need to cover the whole cross-border route to Newry.

  3. Pause, picnic, return

Bring water and snacks, share the path considerately and allow plenty of time to get back before your hire ends. Pick up a picnic in the village before setting off.

Getting to the Greenway from the hotel involves village roads. Check the access route with your hire provider; the full route should not be assumed suitable for every young rider.

An adventure for older children

  1. Choose one main adventure

Pick Skypark or a session with Carlingford Adventure Centre. Start with the age, height and confidence requirements, then book an activity everyone can join.

  2. Pack for the activity

Follow the provider’s clothing and equipment advice. Ask about footwear, changing arrangements and wet-weather plans; bring a change of clothes for water activities.

  3. Keep the afternoon easy

Return to the village for food and a short harbour stroll, or try Escape HQ’s village scavenger hunt if everyone wants another challenge.

Activities, supervision rules and opening dates vary. Book directly with the provider and confirm the meeting point before leaving the hotel.

A quieter coastal escape

  1. Choose your coast

Templetown offers a sandy beach day; Gyles Quay suits a scenic coastal stop. Check the forecast and local bathing conditions before deciding.

  2. Let the day unfold

Bring a picnic, warm layers and something to sit on. Give children time to explore the sand while an adult keeps watch; a beach visit does not have to include swimming.

  3. Plan the way back

Have your return lift arranged before leaving Carlingford. If driving a wider loop, Greenore makes another village stop, with café options and views across the lough.

Lifeguards are seasonal and parking can fill quickly. Check current water quality and local signs; do not assume there is lifeguard cover when you arrive.

When the rain arrives

Keep a plan B.

Try an Escape HQ escape room with older children, browse local crafts, or visit the Heritage Centre when it is open. The scavenger hunt is outdoors, so save that for weather you are happy to walk in.

A café stop and a shorter day can work better than pushing through. If a swim is the plan, contact the Four Seasons Leisure Club about non-resident access before travelling; a McKevitt’s room does not include pool access.

Your family’s village base

Make yourself at home.

Our family and quad room options sleep up to four. Tell us your children’s ages, bed preferences and any access needs so we can help you choose. As a lively village hotel with music and Club M, we also recommend discussing your room’s location with the team if an early night is a priority.
