Taaffe’s Castle
A merchant tower on the old waterfront
The story
The main tower was probably built in the early sixteenth century, with a northern extension added later in that century. Trade could be handled below while the merchant household occupied the upper floors.
Its stair tower, fireplaces, garderobes, defensive loops and protected entrance combine the practical needs of commerce, family life and security in a frontier port.
The familiar association with the Taaffe family is traditional rather than proven by surviving documents. The name is part of Carlingford’s inherited story, but not a settled ownership record.
